1500’s Camera Obscura
1725 Johann Schulz- First light sensitive material
1816 Joseph Niepce- First negative/photograph
1826 Niepce discovers that Bitumen of Judea (asphalt) could be used as a light sensitive varnish. Faint image on metal plate.
1835 Louis Dageurre- High polished silver sheet could be made light sensitive when exposed to iodine vapor. Image could be “fixed” using a hot salt solution. Used the camera obscura
1839 Dageurre patents process “Dageurre process”. Pictures called Dageurreotypes.
1835 William Talbot 1841 patent
1871 Richard Maddox- Dry plate negative using silver nitrate and gelatin. This process completely changes photography and stays the same for a while.
1888 George Eastman- First flexible roll of film
1889 Celluloid backing replaces paper
1900 Brownie camera
1930’s Flash bulb replaces flash powder. Makes using a flash safer.
1947 Edwin Land- Polaroid Land Camera Instant black and white picture in 60 seconds.
1963 Polaroid goes color.
1970’s-80’s Cartridge Cameras, Disc Camera, Reusable Flash, Disposable Cameras
